Vision Rehabilitation for Everyday Independence

Vision rehabilitation through occupational therapy helps individuals with vision loss safely and independently engage in daily life. Occupational therapists focus on practical activities such as self-care, reading, home management, work, and community mobility. Treatment is individualized and may include visual scanning and tracking training, adaptive strategies, low-vision tools, and environmental modifications. The goal is to maximize functional vision and independence in everyday routines.

Services We Offer

We offer a range of occupational therapy services designed to support both individuals with vision-related challenges and professionals seeking advanced guidance. Services are grounded in evidence-based practice, functional outcomes, and a client-centered approach.

  • The vision rehabilitation evaluation is a comprehensive assessment completed by an occupational therapist to understand how vision changes affect daily life. The evaluation focuses on functional vision rather than eyesight alone.

During the evaluation, the occupational therapist assesses visual skills such as scanning, tracking, visual attention, contrast sensitivity, and visual processing, as well as how these skills impact activities like self-care, reading, home management, mobility, and work tasks. The therapist also evaluates the home and community environment, safety risks, and current strategies being used.

The evaluation allows the occupational therapist to identify strengths, challenges, and meaningful goals, and to create an individualized treatment plan that supports safety, independence, and participation in daily activities.

  • Vision rehabilitation intervention is the individualized treatment provided by an occupational therapist to help clients function safely and independently despite vision loss. Interventions are focused on improving performance in meaningful daily activities rather than changing eyesight itself.

Occupational therapy interventions may include training in visual scanning and tracking, development of compensatory strategies, use of adaptive or low-vision tools, and modification of tasks and environments to improve safety and efficiency. Education and practice are provided to support confidence, problem-solving, and carryover into daily routines.

The goal of intervention is to maximize functional vision, promote independence, and support participation in home, work, and community activities.

  • Vision rehabilitation consultation is a collaborative service in which an occupational therapist provides expert guidance to support individuals, families, caregivers, and other professionals managing vision-related challenges. Consultation focuses on problem-solving and recommendations rather than ongoing direct treatment.

During consultation, the occupational therapist reviews concerns, observes functional performance when appropriate, and provides education, strategies, and environmental recommendations to improve safety, accessibility, and participation in daily activities. This may include guidance on home or workplace modifications, adaptive equipment, and routines that support functional vision.

The goal of consultation is to empower others with practical strategies and informed recommendations that enhance independence and quality of life for individuals with vision impairment.

  • Professional mentoring services provide individualized, non-clinical support for occupational therapy practitioners and related professionals seeking to strengthen clinical reasoning, expand specialty knowledge, and enhance professional practice. These services are educational and consultative in nature and are not patient care services.

Mentoring may include case-based discussion, guidance in vision rehabilitation practice, support with program development, documentation strategies, and professional growth planning. Services are tailored to the mentee’s experience level, goals, and practice setting.

The goal of professional mentoring is to build confidence, competence, and clarity in professional decision-making while supporting ethical, effective, and sustainable practice.
